Shade dappled and quiet, surrounded by Buddhist temples and forest, the old boxing ring seemed a rustic, almost theatrical place to shoot a Muay Thai technique book. What author Glen Cordoza and I found, unfortunately, was the rustic environs were too busy to shoot the clean, crisp photos necessary to make a precise instructional book.
We needed a studio, but in Thailand a professional photo studio is hard to find. We thought we would underexpose the background, lighting the fighters performing the techniques with strobes to separate them from the busy background. Plugging in the heavy strobe units, which Glen had carried all the way from the U.S., we heard a popping, a sizzling, a flash of fire, then smoke rising from the strobe heads.
We changed gyms. We thought that perhaps a wide open pasture with Brahma cows and the candy colored Thai sky might be simplistic enough a background. It was not.
Sloshing through a thin lake of water, fish guts, rotten vegetables and rats, we found a market fabric shop who agreed to sew us a sail big enough to cover one entire side of a boxing ring. The following day we picked up the cloth. The technical problems however, did not stop there; we had a background, but still needed to light it. Lacking our daylight balanced strobe system, we went to a hardware store and bought 1,000 watt outdoor lights to bolt to our strobe stands.
Turning out studio quality photos, I thought the job was as good as done. Then the shutter broke down on our tired old 40D. A quick trip to Bangkok and many thousands of Baht later, we had a new 60D, cutting edge technology.
It is a lesson any visitor to Thailand should learn; there is always a way to get things done here, and Glen’s book, shot outdoors in a wind whipped studio with suboptimal lighting conditions will, when released, stand as the paramount catalogue of Thai boxing technique and style.

As stated in Tate’s blog, the trails and tribulations of shooting in Thailand haven’t been easy; in fact, it’s been a downright nightmare. And while equipment failure, location, and adapting to ever changing light conditions has been difficult, none of that compares to my struggle to find the perfect talent.
Before I arrived in Thailand to begin the photo shoot for victory belt’s upcoming Muay Thai instructional book, I devised a game plan that would allow me to shoot carefully selected fighters from some of the most popular gyms in Thailand. This would not allow me to incorporate a variety of techniques, but also illustrate the different fighting styles that are common throughout Thailand. However, as I traveled to different gyms to profile potential fighters, I realized that shooting in such a chaotic fashion would make it difficult to create a system of techniques.
To avoid confusion, I decided to choose a couple of fighters that have a similar fighting style, shoot the entire book using only those athletes, and then go back through the book once it’s finished to fill in the blanks with a fighter that has the polar opposite fighting style. This would allow me to create a book that is not only well organized and easy to understand, but also illustrate the different ways in which you can execute a specific technique.
Four weeks and 25 gyms later, I hadn’t taken a single photo for the book. Although I had encountered several worthy fighters, none of them had the qualities that I was looking for. In order make the best book possible, I had to find someone that was willing to work long hours as well as provide me with a few hundred techniques.
In a desperate attempt to find a legitimate candidate, I contacted Tate Zanstra, a professional photographer and author that had traveled Thailand documenting Thai boxing for his upcoming victory belt book. He was already in Thailand shooting a Muay Thai instructional DVD, so I shot him an e-mail explaining my dilemma. He suggested that I contact two brothers by the name of Pet-ak and Pet-o Sitjopor, two champion fighters that are currently living in Hua Hin, a small beach city south of Bangkok.
After a short phone conversation with Pet-ak, called ‘O’ by his friends, I traveled south from Chiang Mai, met up with Tate in Bangkok, and then shot down to Hua Hin to meet the twins. It didn’t take me long to realize that these guys would be perfect for the book. Not only were they accomplished champions, but they had excellent technique and were willing to work hard to make this the best book possible. If you read Tate’s blog, you already know that finding fighters to shoot the book with was only the beginning of my problems. Since starting work we’ve dealt equipment failure and environmental issues have made shooting difficult. However, I feel extremely lucky to have such good fighters for the book and Tate to help me out with the photos. Having already accumulated close to two hundred techniques, I can honestly say without ego that this will be the best instructional Muay Thai book on the market.

[picture I posted 1 year ago-my second meeting with Anna-first in Kulim]
This is a reproduced article by Tate Zandstra [vid above]. I first published it in May 2008.
The ring is lit by a single old flood, choked with mosquitoes and various insects, flying and crawling, drawn to the light the way a drunken crowd is drawn to violence. Crowd roar rises and clashes off the corrugated roof of the small island stadium. This is Muay Thai in the country; no records, few rules, a fight in a dusty, sweaty little stadium carved out of the surrounding jungle.
Anna has fallen into a trap her mind set for her tonight. In this, her first fight, she has planned too much, held back, preserving precious energy, and Nong Tik, with the intangible benefit of experience, is beating Anna on points.
Ringside, Namsaknoi, one of Thailand's celebrated champions, watches the fight with visible apprehension; not for fear of his students safety, which is necessarily forfeit in the ring, but for simple fear that she will lose. Namsaknoi has fought nearly 300 fights around the world in his career, capturing championships, and each one is deadly serious. Now that he teaches Farang, foreigners, he channels his own desire for victory into them, and if they lose; it takes him some days to recover.
The bell tolls, signaling the end to the fifth round; Anna has just lost by decision. Namsaknoi is upset, but he has been here long enough to know that a loss is only a minor setback.
A little taller than average, with an athletic build and the pale, blond hair and blue eyed cast of features classically Nordic, Anna is one of a growing female minority among the traditionally male sport of Muay Thai.
Muay Thai is a sport whose object is to outscore, or ideally to knockout, the opponent- with fist, shin, knee or elbow. With the advent of modern boxing gloves and timed rounds in the early 1900's fatality rates dropped radically, but grave injury is still quite common; broken arms and ribs, concussions and other head trauma are part of the territory. What would make a 21 year old Swedish university girl want to live in a concrete cell with no shower and very few comforts?
"I got interested in muay thai and started to search the internet for good camps, and I went to Chorenrit for the first time. After training there one month I was absolutely convinced that I wanted to be in the ring, I just loved the atmosphere of the fightnights."
Having trained kickboxing earlier in life, Anna was lucky to have found Chorenrit and Namsaknoi, which could be likened to happening into a gym in east L.A. and receiving your training from Oscar De La Hoya. With a stunning career record behind him, Namsaknoi is remarkable among Thai trainers in that he becomes very attached to his students' success.
"I guess that it's hard for someone who has been brought up with Muay Thai to understand how it is to learn from the start when you are grown up." Anna says of Namsaknoi's teaching methods. "Some things that he takes for granted are new for me. When I've been training with him he has always pushed me hard and it has been very tough for the self confidence sometimes, but it is definitely the right way to learn Muay Thai; it teaches you to keep fighting no matter how hard it feels, both during training and in the fight."
Typical training regimens in Thailand are based on tradition rather than science. Run in the morning and do some body weight exercises; push ups, pull ups, sit ups, then you may have breakfast. While fighters from elsewhere use supplements, advanced nutrition, and complex training models, the Thais do it much as they always have, and are still the best in the world.
"I also think that it has been a great help for me to already from the beginning train with someone who is very technical, that way I get a lot of criticism, but I learn my techniques the right way from the beginning, instead of learning something wrong and having to change it later."
In her second fight, Anna was able to rematch Nong Tik, and events played out quite differently than in their first meeting. Anna stopped her opponent in the final seconds of the first with a crushing knee to the head coming off a clinch. "Even Namsaknoi seemed pretty satisfied."
If the culture of Muay Thai is shocking, then Thai culture must be equally exotic. With dense jungle, beautiful warm oceans, coral reefs, spicy curries and vibrant music, and friendly people, Thailand well deserves it's huge tourist economy (2nd only in earnings to rice production). Living with Thai boxers goes fairly out of the ordinary for most western visitors.
"Living in the gym was a very interesting experience. Altogether it was eight people living there. Besides Saminlek's girlfriend, we were all nakmuays. (Nak Muay, literally meaning boxing student) I had my own room with a bed, a fan, a mosquito-net, and a table to put my stuff on. We all shared toilets and the "shower". One time a day Saminlek (A veteran Thai boxer who has well over 300 fights) poured up water in the big sink in the shower and that was what we used; we never used pouring water. The standard was low, even for Thaïs I think but I loved it. Of course it was annoying sometimes but I got used to it to the point that I actually didn't really feel comfortable showering when I got home, (Sweden) the pouring water felt like such a waste. Before living at Chorenrit I would have described myself as a person with big integrity, I need my alone-time and I need my space. At first I had a hard time with always having people around me, even if I had my door closed, I could always hear people outside or someone would come knocking on my door to borrow something. But I quickly got used to it and that is the thing that I now would say that I loved the most about staying in the gym. As I got to know everyone more and more, we had so much fun in the gym, joking around or laying in the gym watching Muay Thai on TV. Even if the standard was very low I came to like it, it is very relaxing living that way."
The Nak Muay themselves, the true fighters of Thailand, most of whom at Chorenrit are barely out of their teens, show a different side of themselves to those westerners who get to know them than to those who see them only when they are fighting. Anna says of these men who she lived with;
"You always have to remind yourself to be very polite and grateful to everyone around you, and it is a quite serious culture with a lot of integrity (Did I tell you when I threw a shoe at Namsaknoi's head?). On the other hand it is quite the opposite, very friendly, happy, kind of childish way of acting.Everything is just sabai sabai (Calm, calm) and mai pen rai (Never mind, or don't worry) and the people are very outgoing. I'm also very amazed by the way Thai men are not afraid of being (what westerners would call) feminine (for example the nakmuay´s love for pink shorts and they are very physical with each other, touching, massaging and everything). It is also very appealing to me the Thai culture that I've met where it's not so important to be rich or to have a successful career, you just work as much as you have to, to earn your living."
What is next for Anna in her new career as a Muay Thai fighter? She has recently competed in the Swedish nationals, not quite capturing the win against the girl who would go on to win the entire weight division, but she says that she will be back again next year; both to the nationals and to Chorenrit, to continue training and fighting, and learning from her mentor, Namsaknoi.

This video is dedicated to all my brothers and Sisters at Boxx Warriors Malaysia.
Many people believed what I told them about the gym, some says I exaggerate...haha.
Every fortnight I ferry those who don't have any contact with Boxx Warriors for the Glove Camp program.
I don't know if they noticed, but this may sound very spooky, whoever land their fist, elbow, kick or knee on any of the gym punching bag, we accept them as one of ours and I know they feel the same way too..Ha-ha...Another of my spin? Why don't you come and experience it yourself...
The second time they come, it’s more than wanting to learn more things, it’s actually homecoming for most of us.
I used to leave the following note [lyric] to many people, well after being there,I hope they understand what it mean:
We are programmed to receive. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave
Nak salah siapa?
1-Sikap sendiri [tiada wawasan]
Are we serious about our vision.
If you notice, all my merchandize never carry Boxx Warriors logo even with my close association with them.

Beside merchandize we also will market the gym [Glove Camp] worldwide.
BoxxTomoi Shoppe is looking for inspiring T-shirt designers.
For those chosen you will receive a free training at the glove camp [3 days exclude transport – worth RM200.00] Term and Condition applied. Email your design any time . No closing date.
In the business world the chronology is termed Technology Transfer.
He was 15 when he trains with Arjan Songwang, [tactician and Namsaknoi trainer] Roni, grad A fighters and trainer Q-Eikkasit and Arjan Wanchinchai.
Now, at 18 he was holding pad/pao for Firdaus Janai, Fauzan Zabidi, Maman, Bow Suwailek, Maros Pacan, Abbas Ahmadi and Q-Eikkasit.
I think Mr.Zahari is proud of him as he is with his dynamics local Nak Muay. The formula, get the best and learn from them. The bottom-line people will measure your success with the local nak muay and trainer you produced. Meet Bulat [round] or his real name Nor Fahami, assistance trainer at Boxx Warriors Malaysia.
Testimony from his students [all have learn MT in other gym before]
1- Musaddik, my next trip I want Bulat as my personal trainer or better can you bring him to KL
- Morna Sulaiman
2-The last day session.Boy I learnt the most this day.was on pao for 5 rounds then defense technique and sparring session.Thank you so much bulat for coming!
-Elyani [Lani]
By 2011 the Glove Camp will trained at least 20 trainees from KL each month...where will they go when they are back...? I don't think KL gyms know the potential... I can give them 20 new students every month!!
What a girl Wants
On 5 to 7th November, Boxx Warriors Malaysia hold a [trial] Ladies only Glove Camp. The actual session for ladies will start very soon. Also joining the camp are Jemain & Zaini both from KawanBoxx Muay Boran Gym [Setia Wangsa]
I like to thanks Lani,Morna,Sudatip Wiloedrem and Marissa Chin, for their participant and feedback.
I like to thanks the gym management, trainers [Q-Eikkasit,Abbas,Bow and Bulat] for accommodating the participants. Also my thanks to a local vernacular paper that cover the event .
People in Malaysia think Muay Thai is violent and create violent society. People in Malaysia think Muay Thai should not be practiced in Malaysia because they come from Thailand (I wonder where does golf come from but it is played here). Sponsors think Muay Thai fans have no buying power because this sport is only watched by the villagers. Sponsors think Muay Thai fans only available in Thailand. Sponsors think Muay Thai only attract “low class” people … but one thing for sure, whoever thinks that way, obviously they have never been to a Muay Thai tournament, they judge Muay Thai only from one angle and that is from NEGATIVE angle point of view. This year, I had the opportunity to go to three events. The first one was a national level martial art competition held in Kulim. They rented a BIG hall as the venue. And guess what, the number of spectators were around 200 people….and one thing I must tell you, the entrance is free (obviously because the participants are amature, so the organizer don’t have to pay any cash prize money and also…THEY HAVE BIG SPONSORSHIP).The second one was another finale of another martial competition, despite big budget allocated and presence of the minister … the number of contestant outnumbered the audience. The third one was only last weekend. It was a promotion held in Kulim by a GIANT telco company. When I arrived at the venue, they had about 5 small canopies and 1 BIG canopy with a estimated number of 50 staffs. The best thing was, only four people or I would rather say four potential customers at the venue and one of them was me.I asked one of the staffs, “How much do u spend for this promotion event?” and he replied around 5 – 6 thousand Malaysia Ringgit. And I said to him that I can guarantee a minimum number of 1,000 people will come and visit their promotion with that amount of budget. He smiled and asked me how am I going to do that. Well, I said to him its simple….”I just bring in my boxing ring and provide local pro Muay Thai fighters to fight at your promotion venue and its free for public to watch, I can guarantee you, you will need the traffic police to control the traffic flows”. To my surprised, he commented that they might not get the right crowd for their products and services. I asked him again, have u ever watched a Muay Thai fight in Malaysia? He just kept quiet….and again I felt a bit disappointed with the way people judge Muay Thai in Malaysia. Majority don’t realize that Muay Thai fights in Malaysia attract all level of people…just name the kind of people and they are there. School childrens, university students, teachers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, expatriates, c.e.o.s….just name it. But of course, in order for you to have this large number of crowd, proper marketing and promoting plan must be implemented. And why do Muay Thai fights attract people? Simple because they are real and the fight is full of spectacular action.Daniel Mashamaite, a boxer from South Africa fought four times in Malaysia. During his last fight in Malaysia he said I surely have big sponsorship in my pocket because I organize a lot of tournaments in a year and there are always big crowd watching. He was surprised when I said that for Kedah International Muay Thai Championship the sponsorship amount that I managed to get after begging was not more than 30,000 Malaysia Ringgit when I have more than 4,000 paid crowd and 1,000 free passes (the audience paid 13 ringgit ticket…you don’t have to calculate how much we made, because how much do u think is the cost to organize an international event? ). Just imagine how many people can I attract if the entrance is FREE…but if I were to do that, who is going to pay for the cost of organizing?Sponsors will surely get maximum mileage if they sponsor Muay Thai event, that I can guarantee. Sponsor will not only get return in terms of branding mileage, they can even generate cash sales in return by sponsoring Muay Thai event, that I can also guarantee 100 % (but sorry guys, cant tell you the method…well, I can tell you how but I am afraid I have to kill you after that ) . The problem is, most of the decision maker, turn down our proposal just because he or she doesn’t like Muay Thai (or maybe our proposal is not convincing….hmmm…I will improve on that).A conversation I had with an officer of a State Government owned company….she said they are unable to sponsor Muay Thai event because Muay Thai is not related to their company but she also said “but we can sponsor GOLF” … huh ??? is golf related to a state government company when the company’s activity circling around the development of the state? Well, I guess they sponsor golf because their bosses play golf .. poor you Muay Thai.BOXX is going to operate a Muay Thai centre soon. We are targeting school children to participate and we plan to charge them between 2 – 5 malaysia ringgit a month (in order to cover the operational cost … don’t laugh, ok). I am expecting the majority of the school children who turn up will be the kind of “aggressive children”. The non aggressive might choose piano class instead (maybe these aggressive boys” will go to piano class too…will they?). When these aggressive children turn up for training at .. let say 5 pm .. they will not straight away start punching and kicking. We are gong to organize a 15 minutes informal classes on anti smoking, anti drug, anti crime and all those positive classes. The speakers will come from various related government agencies ( I hope they support this effort). The speakers will sit among these boys and tell them stories about the bad thing about smoking, drug etc… (they will run away if we conduct the class in a formal way, that’s for sure because I would run away too). We might even get an ex drug addict to relate his experience to there boys. These classes will be conducted from time to time. My prediction is, after few years, these boys will still be “aggressive boys” because the aggressiveness is already in them but they will be equipped with knowledge. We hope to instill positive values in these boys through Muay Thai training and all those classes. What I am trying to say is…. YOU CAN USE MUAY THAI AS A TOOL TO CREATE A GOOD CITIZEN…GOOD PEOPLE. Only if you are not negative towards it (because I don’t think the boys will attend just an anti smoking or anti drug classes). No matter what, no matter how big the obstacle is, we … at BOXX EVENT will never surrender. We, with the support from all of you with continue with our struggle to position Muay Thai to where it should be …Last but not least, I would like to thank everybody who has been supporting Muay Thai activities in Malaysia and please continue visiting this blog because it is also a prove that Muay Thai has big fans all around the world.
