CONTENDER ASIA II - The Super 8

Most people have read the result of the Super 8 fight and most must be shocked by the result as many have predicted a win by Tengku Shahrizal of PDRM. The biggest surprise was the elimination of Tengku Shahrizal at the hand of Alif Zulkifli my grandnephew of which none of us would give him half a chance other than Zahari of Boxxwarriors who has seen Alif's transformation after his transfer from M 150 Kota Bharu. Zahari made a comment somewhere that Alif and Wes Jaya may spring a surprise because they are the dark horses.
If you visit Malaysian Tiger's site and look at their poll, Alif didn't receive a single vote. Even I didn't give my grandnephew my vote. How shameful of me.
Now to satiate your craving for news about the event, here are some pictures to lessen your burden. Sorry I am not in the frame of mind to write lengthy fight reviews as I haven't viewed all of my video footage.
The Super 8 in pictures.

This is what they were fighting for, the prestigious belt when you are throned as the champion. Any lesser positions will mean only a trophy. Only the champion will take home RM3,000 prize money and the losing finalist will get half of that.

The VIPs includes Mr. Riaz Mehta The Executive Director of The Contender Asia.

Look who is here. It is Stephen Fox the presenter of Contender Asia. The other guy is a Kelantanese with KL Freestyle Kickboxing. Didn't get his name though we have met at an earlier event in Dewan Kompleks Sekolah-sekolah Wakaf Mek Zainab.

This is Sam, the Production Manager of The Contender Asia. He interviewed Pak Zawi to gauge the spectators responce to the event. Come June, Pak Zawi will have the fleeting seconds of fame when millions of people from 20 countries view the show. Thanks to Bernard who had not much option when Sam asked him for an English speaking spectator. Did Pak Zawi fit in the bill? You will have to watch the show to find out.

Puan Surina gave Pak Zawi the best ringside seat with the permission to shoot videos from the seat. Fair enough when you have several television cameras trained towards the ring, a camera man with a camcorder by the rings edge will not make a good scene.

The fighters will enter the ring walking on a raised platform just like a catwalk. The only difference is you don't see pretty models on it but tough and mean looking oily men displaying their bare muscular upper torso. Here you see Bedu and Eikkasit escorting Alif to the ring. Hey Alif has a six pack now!

The opening act was a fight between Mat Ropi and a fighter from Langkawi by the name of Nasir Saad. Despite the thunderous cheer from the home crowd especially from the MC, Mat Ropi failed to deliver the finishing touch to KO his opponent. Mat Ropi clearly lacks the finishing touch. He won by points though.

The Super 8 fight started with Tengku Sharizal of PDRM against Kudin Raja Jerung of MT. Pokku finished off the fight with a KO over Kudin in the first round! He must be saving his strength for later. Having been KOed in another earlier match with Ediey Selendang Kuning earlier in the mont, Kudin may have not repuperate well enough.

The second Super 8 fight was between Alif and Hashim Ramli of Terengganu. Alif doing the wai kru. Alif's fitness seemed to have improved a lot since his fight against Barbod of Iran in November 2008.

Alif's opponent was Hashim Ramli a fighter with 25 fight records against Alif's 20. Alif made a short work of it and KOed Hashim in the second round. This was the first upset. Terengganu's dream of having her own Nak Muay fighter in Contender Asia II in Terengganu was dashed. Hashim is a good fighter with a good built. They will have to contend with a Kelantanese to carry the Malaysian flag together with Bernard Radin of Sarawak the other qualifier.

Wes Jaya is the fighter from Boxxwarriors. He seems relaxed before the match started. Wes Jaya is a Malaysian based in Vancouver Canada.
Wes doing the wai kru with his opponent Azwan of M - 150 in the background. Wes Jaya won this match by knocking out Azwan in the second round.
Khoo May Yang of TNT came in for the third fight. This fighter is considered by some as impossible to be felled. His opponent Faizal of Malaysian Tigers later proved that nothing is impossible. A low kick to Khoo's leg felled him.

Khoo psyching his opponent before the fight.

Khoo and Faizal in a tight embrace.

Khoo's cornerman trying to ascertain if Khoo was alright after the fight went the distance of five rounds. Faizal was adjudged the winner based on points.

The first semifinal was between Tengku Shahrizal. Nobody consider Alif as a threat to Tengku Sharizal by the way he demolished Kudin Raja Jerung ealier. Alif proved otherwise and Tengku Shahrizal was KOed in the second round.

Wes Jaya came in next against Faizal Siku Emas.

Faizal attacked Wes with his elbow and blood oozed from the wound. The referee stopped the fight in the second round and so Faizal won by a TKO.

Wes was sutured up after the fight. When he stopped over at my house in Pasir Mas with the entourage led by Zahari, Wes looked none the worse for wear. Soon he will be fighting again.

Faizal was given the last instruction befor he fought Alif in the final. I have no pictures of the final fight. Suffice to say, Alif had no answer to the attacks by Faizal. Alif seems to have run out of gas and was happy to be the second best in the tournament. Given the earlier predictions, going beyond the first round was more than enough for him. Getting the scalp of Tengku Shahrizal was prized enough for him. Soon Alif will be fighting in Lumpinee Bangkok. Lumpinee is the dream venue for any nak muays from Malaysia. Being able to fight there will be a dream come true for Alif. Thanks to Boxxwarrior, Alif will soon have his dream come true.

During the break, Faizal seemed to enjoy a cold bath given by his cornerman.

Faizal the champion

The victor was ecstatic when the belt was wrapped around his waiste by Mr. Riaz helped by the topgun of MT.
The vanquised found solace in being able to reach somewhere no one had ever think he would.

All team managers were given a token of appreciation by the Organizer. Here En. Zahari the boss of Kulim Gym was seen getting his.

Mr. Zahari of Boxxwarriors and Mr. Farek of M 150 Kota Bharu. Both men have had a hand in the development of Alif's career as Alif was with M 150 before his transfer to Boxxwarriors.

All the contenders were in the ring to be phtographed. Where is Kudin? Kudin was out of frame on the extreme right. I will find another picture with Kudin in it. My apologies to Kudin and MT.

Pak Zawi, if you send from KB, should reach me by tomorrow.Hantar pos express pun sampai besuk juga, murah sikit.Thank abang!

Abu, in fact Big Z told me before the fight, don't be surprise IF Alif represent Malaysia!Anon, Alif and Wes got all the support from fellow gym crew. Q,Abbas. Amin, Bedu and juniors Fauzan & Firdaus and the man himself Big Z.

Fauzan bagi tahu Wes, itu sahaja peluang yang dia dapat, frankly after this you wont see Faizal fight local Nak Muay anymore, he has join the elitist like Benard, You hear Benard take local Nak Muay? NO. So Wes peluang anda dan tak ada! sorry ! tunggu 6bulan selepas CA2 habis..
I acknowledge Faizal as the best Mauy boxer in Malaysia right now.

Di Kompleks belia hari jumaat saya suka tengok reaksi Bernard bila orang cakap benda benda macam dia takut nak lawan nak muay tempatan. Hanya tersenyum saja tanpa membalas apa2.

Pak Zawi,

Sammy is not from Axn. He is one of the producer from Contender asia 1(3 episodes) and Contender Boxing for Mark Burnett and lots of other reality show like soccer star, american idol etc. He will be part of the team for TCA2. He is from Hollywood Los Angeles.

Linda,
Thamks. Done some correction there.

someone from a gym in damansara told me that the feud between Bernard and Ediey started in one of the gyms there (he doesn't tell me which gym hush....)Something that Bernard said intimidated Ediey. That's what I was told, whether true or not, I don't know. Bernard vs Ediey will sure be an event in my list, a highly rated event. This will be a great event since we'll be witnessing the fight between the First Malaysian Contender vs Kelantan's no 1 fighter. Do you feel the heat?

Nice reporting Pak Zawi! I just wished for more dynamic photos (on a cd perhaps!). Anyway, Alif really make us PROUD!

> "Lumpinee is the dream venue for any nak muays from Malaysia"
Actually, it is a dream for every Nakmuay! and I hope Alif will do his best there! early congrat to Alif for being in Lumpinee - which is a much hotter & real place to be than this reality show.

Oji,
Thank you for appreciating the simple report.
The Video CD should reach Boxxtomoi today. Sent some earlier via Zahari but he seemed to be stuck in Kulim and so I have to send another set via Poslaju yesterday. Sabar ya nanti Mr. Boxxtomoi akan kerja keras malam ni dan post video untuk tontonan semua tengah malam nanti atau pagi besok. Cuma Boxxtomoi.blogspot.com yang ada semua video of all the fights selain dari AXN of course.

MUAY THAI DILEMMA IN MALAYSIA

People in Malaysia think Muay Thai is violent and create violent society. People in Malaysia think Muay Thai should not be practiced in Malaysia because they come from Thailand (I wonder where does golf come from but it is played here).

Sponsors think Muay Thai fans have no buying power because this sport is only watched by the villagers. Sponsors think Muay Thai fans only available in Thailand. Sponsors think Muay Thai only attract “low class” people but one thing for sure, whoever thinks that way, obviously they have never been to a Muay Thai tournament, they judge Muay Thai only from one angle and that is from NEGATIVE angle point of view. This year, I had the opportunity to go to three events.

The first one was a national level martial art competition held in Kulim. They rented a BIG hall as the venue. And guess what, the number of spectators were around 200 people….and one thing I must tell you, the entrance is free (obviously because the participants are amature, so the organizer don’t have to pay any cash prize money and also…THEY HAVE BIG SPONSORSHIP).The second one was another finale of another martial competition, despite big budget allocated and presence of the minister … the number of contestant outnumbered the audience. The third one was only last weekend.

It was a promotion held in Kulim by a GIANT telco company. When I arrived at the venue, they had about 5 small canopies and 1 BIG canopy with a estimated number of 50 staffs. The best thing was, only four people or I would rather say four potential customers at the venue and one of them was me.I asked one of the staffs, “How much do u spend for this promotion event?” and he replied around 5 – 6 thousand Malaysia Ringgit. And I said to him that I can guarantee a minimum number of 2,000 people will come and visit their promotion with that amount of budget.

He smiled and asked me how am I going to do that. Well, I said to him its simple….”I just bring in my boxing ring and provide local pro Muay Thai fighters to fight at your promotion venue and its free for public to watch, I can guarantee you, you will need the traffic police to control the traffic flows”.

To my surprised, he commented that they might not get the right crowd for their products and services. I asked him again, have u ever watched a Muay Thai fight in Malaysia? He just kept quiet….and again I felt a bit disappointed with the way people judge Muay Thai in Malaysia. Majority don’t realize that Muay Thai fights in Malaysia attract all level of people…just name the kind of people and they are there.

School children, university students, teachers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, expatriates, c.e.o.s….just name it. But of course, in order for you to have this large number of crowd, proper marketing and promoting plan must be implemented. And why do Muay Thai fights attract people? Simple because they are real and the fight is full of spectacular action.

Daniel Mashamaite, a boxer from South Africa fought four times in Malaysia. During his last fight in Malaysia he said I surely have big sponsorship in my pocket because I organize a lot of tournaments in a year and there are always big crowd watching. He was surprised when I said that for Kedah International Muay Thai Championship the sponsorship amount that I managed to get after begging was not more than 30,000 Malaysia Ringgit when I have more than 4,000 paid crowd and 1,000 free passes (the audience paid 13 ringgit ticket…you don’t have to calculate how much we made, because how much do u think is the cost to organize an international event? ).

Just imagine how many people can I attract if the entrance is FREE…but if I were to do that, who is going to pay for the cost of organizing?Sponsors will surely get maximum mileage if they sponsor Muay Thai event, that I can guarantee. Sponsor will not only get return in terms of branding mileage, they can even generate cash sales in return by sponsoring Muay Thai event, that I can also guarantee 100 % (but sorry guys, cant tell you the method…well, I can tell you how but I am afraid I have to kill you after that ) . The problem is, most of the decision maker, turn down our proposal just because he or she doesn’t like Muay Thai (or maybe our proposal is not convincing….hmmm…I will improve on that).

A conversation I had with an officer of a State Government owned company….she said they are unable to sponsor Muay Thai event because Muay Thai is not related to their company but she also said “but we can sponsor GOLF” … huh ??? is golf related to a state government company when the company’s activity circling around the development of the state?

Well, I guess they sponsor golf because their bosses play golf .. poor you Muay Thai. BOXX is going to operate a Muay Thai centre soon. We are targeting school children to participate and we plan to charge them between 2 – 5 malaysia ringgit a month (in order to cover the operational cost … don’t laugh, ok). I am expecting the majority of the school children who turn up will be the kind of “aggressive children”. The non aggressive might choose piano class instead (maybe these aggressive boys” will go to piano class too…will they?). When these aggressive children turn up for training at .. let say 5 pm .. they will not straight away start punching and kicking.

We are gong to organize a 15 minutes informal classes on anti smoking, anti drug, anti crime and all those positive classes. The speakers will come from various related government agencies ( I hope they support this effort). The speakers will sit among these boys and tell them stories about the bad thing about smoking, drug etc… (they will run away if we conduct the class in a formal way, that’s for sure because I would run away too). We might even get an ex drug addict to relate his experience to there boys. These classes will be conducted from time to time.

My prediction is, after few years, these boys will still be “aggressive boys” because the aggressiveness is already in them but they will be equipped with knowledge. We hope to instill positive values in these boys through Muay Thai training and all those classes. What I am trying to say is…. YOU CAN USE MUAY THAI AS A TOOL TO CREATE A GOOD CITIZEN…GOOD PEOPLE. Only if you are not negative towards it (because I don’t think the boys will attend just an anti smoking or anti drug classes).

No matter what, no matter how big the obstacle is, we will never surrender. We, with the support from all of you with continue with our struggle to position Muay Thai to where it should be …

Last but not least, I would like to thank everybody who has been supporting Muay Thai activities in Malaysia and please continue visiting this blog because it is also a prove that Muay Thai has big fans all around the world.
